Chapter Eight

June was already dressed when she dressed Melanie in the morning. It would be the girl’s first wedding to attend and she was slated to be the flower girl.

“You had a nightmare last night,” June said. “Remember?”

“I did?”

“You don’t remember?”

Melanie shrugged.

“Well, I had one too.”

“Was it scary?” the girl asked.

“Very.”

“Did we die?”

“I don’t think so,” June said, with one last tug at Melanie’s dress. “We’re still here this morning, aren’t we?”

Melanie held her hands out in front of her for inspection and wiggled her fingers. Satisfied with what she saw, she lifted one foot and then the other, giving them an inspection also. “Guess so. Still got my feets. Are we going to da wedding today? To toss da flowers?”

“ The , Honey. And we sure are. And we practiced a bunch of times,” June said, brushing Melanie’s hair. “You remember what to do?”

“Walk slow and toss only a couple pebbles at a time.”

“Pe-tals. They’re called pe-tals. What else?”

“No laughing or crying.”

“What else?”

“Stand still when the guy starts to talk.”

“Good girl. Got to go potty?”

“I’m okay.”

“Okay for how long?”

“Long enough,” the girl said, using one of the anachronisms she would’ve picked up from her mother.

They were some of the first to arrive at the resort beach for where the wedding was planned. Keeping Melanie close, June found juice for them to drink and a cookie to keep Melanie occupied. People were chatting on how they had met either the bride or groom, some of them both. June tried eavesdropping on some of the raunchier stories she heard about the groom, a close workmate at the hospital.

June heard her phone ring. Stepping away, she was worried that something had gone wrong with one of her patients. Trying to manage someone’s care needs over the phone was hard enough; doing it from another island was nearly impossible. Looking at the ancient and mostly unused number, she was more than a little surprised she was getting a call from him. She also got something of a thrill, and took several more steps away.

“Jack! Or should I say Mister President?”

“I think we’re still on a first name basis,” he told her in his deep voice. It was good to hear it again, on her phone and not giving a speech on television.

“I hope so. How is the world these days? In as bad of shape as what the media tries to tell me?”

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you. But do you have a few minutes to talk?”

June looked at the guests milling around the wedding ceremony area, but saw neither the bride nor groom. “A few. I’m at a wedding right now, which should start pretty soon.”

“Your own?”

“Ha! I wish! Unfortunately, I don’t inspire much interest from men anymore.”

“You’d inspire me…” was all she heard.

It was a breezy day, and with the five thousand miles between them, the connection wasn’t good, making it hard to hear him. As much as she wanted to chat with the man that she’d been married to for an entire weekend, she needed to get to the point of the call.
